Day 2

Glacier Basin → Shuksan Arm Bivouac

6 km700 m~7 hrs (including climbing)

Early start to traverse the Shuksan Glacier (moderate crevasse hazard; rope team recommended). Ascend to Shuksan Arm where you'll find your climbing objective: three moderate rock pitches (5.7–5.8) on the north face of Mount Shuksan's lower ramparts. The climbing offers excellent protection, clear water, and 360-degree views of the Cascades. Camp at a protected bivouac site (2,600 m) with nearby snowmelt water.

Conditions

Best season: Mid-July to mid-September

The Glacier Basin Trail is well-maintained through mid-July. Glacier crossings are safest before 10 AM. Shuksan Glacier often has visible crevasses; professional guide strongly recommended for first-time alpine climbers. Snow lingers into July at higher elevations. Water is abundant from streams and snowmelt. Camp only at established sites. Leave no trace. Cell service is nonexistent; file a detailed trip plan with someone reliable.

⚠️Glacier crevasses requiring rope team competency
⚠️Afternoon thunderstorms above 2,200 m—start early and descend by 2 PM
⚠️Snowmelt runoff can swell creeks; early morning crossings safer
⚠️Altitude-related issues (2,600 m is moderate; acclimatize properly)
⚠️Exposure on rock pitches—secure anchors essential
⚠️Rapidly changing weather; always have emergency shelter and food
